Teqer Quimcy a step away from history

Nagoya (Japan): One after the other, Quimcy Dsouza played a total of seven matches on Friday. All that effort, and the battle with the ticking clock to recover in between, paid dividends as the lone female teqer in the three-member Indian teqball team progressed to the semifinal of the women’s singles event here.Up against a formidable opponent in the opening Group A match, the Mumbai-born former footballer scored a come-from-behind 10-12, 12-11, 13-11 victory over world No. 7 and top seed Yuina Sakamoto of Japan.Asian Games 2026 | Teqers to kick-start India’s campaign at AsiadCompeting against a loud and roucous home crowd supporting the local girl, Quimcy shut out the noise, regrouped after losing the opening set to stun her higher-ranked opponent in 43 minutes. With her biggest challenge conquered, the Bengaluru-based teqer then turned her focus toard the second group encounter where she outsmarted Cambodia’s Koemyean DY in straight sets (12-9, 12-7).Topping the group helped Quimcy bypass the quarterfinal, courtesy a bye, and move into the semifinal where she takes on Indonesia’s Sumaya. A win would ensure a medal while a loss would put her in a bronze medal match.Following her singles’ spoils, Quimsy then paired-up with Mohammed Anas Imran Beg in the mixed doubles but went down 7-12, 10-12 to Vietnam’s Hoang Minh Tan Nguyen and Gia Nghi Trinh in the quarterfinal. They had reacjhed the knock-out stage after mustering two wins and three losses in the group stage. However, all is not lost yet for the Indian duo as they defeated Philippines’ Jhoana Abulencia and Prince Augustin 12-3, 12-6 in the repechage round to keep their bronze medal hope alive.
