Tumakuru: Gold jewellery worth Rs 38.80 lakh was stolen from the house of doctor Nalina, a resident of Jayanagar South in the City. The jewellery was stolen without breaking open the doors or making any noise. A case was registered on September 4.In another incident, jewellery worth Rs 4.26 lakh was stolen from the house of B Savitha in Saraswatipuram. Here too, there were no signs of forced entry through the doors or windows. The jewellery was simply missing from the cupboard. A case was registered on September 11.Bengaluru: Serial wedding house theft accused arrested; 340 gm gold recoveredSimilarly, gold jewellery worth around Rs 16.50 lakh went missing from the residence of assistant professor B S Shashikala in Gokula Layout. There were no clues indicating that thieves had entered the house. A case was registered on September 14.Two men arrested for goods vehicle theft in Bengaluru’s GovindapuraThree such cases have been reported at Jayanagar Police Station within just 10 days. These are only a few examples. Such thefts have been increasing in different parts of the district in recent times. In several of these cases, neighbours, relatives, domestic workers and caregivers of elderly people have emerged as the accused.“Three people-Sneha, Rakesh and my aunt-who have been working in our house for the past three years are suspected. They knew everything about our household and committed the theft,” Dr Nalina alleged in her complaint. The police arrested Sneha and recovered the stolen jewellery from her.Savitha, in her complaint, said that as my mother was unwell, we had appointed a woman named Bhagyamma as a caregiver. On September 10, we noticed that the jewellery kept in the cupboard was missing. Bhagyamma had stolen it, she accused.Shashikala alleged in her complaint that she used to hand over the house keys to Soumya, a neighbour whom the family had known for 10 years, whenever they went out. “On one such occasion, after we handed over the key and left, Soumya entered the house and stole the gold jewellery. We became suspicious of her based on the way she behaved with us after the incident,” she said. A case has been registered against Soumya. In these cases, neither the doors nor the locks of the cupboards are found broken. Jewellery is stolen without any signs of forced entry, andin many cases, the owners realise the theft only several days later before approaching the police.“The three cases registered at Jayanagar police station are under investigation. Such incidents are increasing because people hand over their house keys to neighbours when they go out, leave spare keys near their homes and fail to remain vigilant about strangers. The public should exercise caution,” police said.Neglect of LHMS usageThe public is also showing a lack of interest in using the Locked House Monitoring System (LHMS) app, which was developed to prevent house burglaries. When residents plan to stay away from home for three or four days, they can inform the nearest police station, following which surveillance cameras can be installed. Through the LHMS app, police keep a watch on the house and monitor the movement of strangers near the premises. However, homeowners are not taking the facility seriously, making it challenging for the police to prevent such thefts.
