New Delhi: The Ministry of Power has directed all thermal power plants with a capacity of 50 MW and above — including independent and captive units — to operate at maximum available capacity from October 1 to December 31, 2026, to meet an anticipated surge in electricity demand.In an order dated September 25 issued under Section 11 of the Electricity Act, 2003, the ministry said the step was taken in the larger public interest to ensure optimal power availability for consumers.The directions have been sent to 112 entities, along with the Chairperson of the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), the CMD of Grid India, the secretaries of the Power and New and Renewable Energy ministries, and all states and Union Territories.Approach NGT with plea on installation of FGD systems in thermal power plants: Supreme Court Citing the prevailing demand-supply situation and the expected rise in electricity needs in the coming months, the ministry emphasised that the entire capacity of all generating sources, including captive plants, must be utilised to the maximum extent possible.Captive coal-based generating stations of 50 MW and above have been specifically instructed to run at the highest possible level of their available capacity. After meeting their own captive requirements, these generators must offer any surplus power through power exchanges in line with applicable market regulations.Plant operators have also been directed to maintain adequate coal stocks to support continuous maximum generation. They must submit weekly reports to the CEA detailing generation, captive consumption, power sales through exchanges or other permitted routes, available capacity and coal stock levels.
