Patna: Close on the heels of students’ protests in New Delhi and Jharkhand, thousands of students in Patna hit the streets of the State Capital here on Tuesday demanding cancellation of the 70th Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) examination over paper leak and other irregularities.These students, who have been holding demonstrations at Gardanibagh area in the State Capital – the designated site to protest, on Tuesday took out a protest march with the national flag in their hand.BPSC protest: Why are government job aspirants protesting in Bihar?Starting from Gandhi Maidan, they had planned to ‘gherao’ the residence of the Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, but the Bihar police foiled their attempt to do so. The protestors, who broke through the barricades, were caned and stopped near the JP roundabout thereby preventing them from moving towards CM’s residence. Water cannons, besides mild lathi-charge, were used to disperse the crowd, comprising mostly job aspirants and youths.PANEL FORMEDMeanwhile, the Samrat Choudhary government announced a five-member committee to examine ways and means to make examinations more fair and transparent. “This five-member panel will be headed by a retired judge and suggest measures to prevent irregularities in the examination,” a senior official said on Tuesday.TOP OFFICIAL SUSPENDEDEarlier, the Bihar Government acted tough and suspended the Examination Controller of the BPSC, Rajesh Kumar Singh, for using a Hindi proverb which compared the students with dogs. Answering a question related to students protesting about the Teachers Recruitment Examination (TRE)-4, where they demanded that a single tier examination be held, instead of PT and Mains, the Examination Controller on Monday used a proverb ‘Hathi chale bazaar, kutta bhaunke hazaar’, which, translated in English, means: “when the elephant walks around, thousands of dogs bark”.On hearing this, Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav reached the students’ protest site and deplored the controversial remark made by the senior BPSC official. By Monday evening, the Samrat Choudhary regime, in its bid to assuage the ruffled feathers of students, suspended the Examination Controller.
