NMC adds 13,636 MBBS seats for 2026-27, nearly 79% in private collegesKarnataka leads state-wise PG seat countKarnataka is followed by Maharashtra with 6,992 PG seats, Tamil Nadu with 6,306 and Uttar Pradesh with 6,082 seats.Andhra Pradesh has 4,142 seats, while Telangana has 3,998, Gujarat 3,862, Rajasthan 3,857 and Madhya Pradesh 3,052.West Bengal has 2,384 PG seats and Kerala has 2,145. Delhi has 1,660 seats, followed by Bihar with 1,470, Odisha with 1,419 and Haryana with 1,129.Punjab has 982 seats, Puducherry 869, Jammu and Kashmir 846 and Assam 822.Among the states and Union Territories with fewer seats, Chhattisgarh has 651, Uttarakhand 648, Himachal Pradesh 375, Jharkhand 292 and Manipur 274. Chandigarh has 162 seats, Goa 159 and Tripura 113.Three new medical colleges proposed for KarnatakaDadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu have 46 seats, followed by Meghalaya with 39, Sikkim with 32, Arunachal Pradesh with 23, Andaman and Nicobar Islands with 13 and Mizoram with 10.General Medicine has highest PG intakeAmong individual postgraduate courses, MD General Medicine has the highest number of seats at 6,143.MD Anaesthesiology follows with 5,672 seats, while MS General Surgery has 5,591 and MS Obstetrics and Gynaecology has 4,690 seats. MD Paediatrics accounts for 4,203 seats.The matrix also includes 3,656 MS Orthopaedics seats, 3,343 MD Pathology seats and 3,224 MD Radio-Diagnosis/Radiology seats. MS Ophthalmology has 2,479 seats.Other major courses include MD Community Medicine with 2,091 seats, MS Otorhinolaryngology/ENT with 2,066, MD Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy with 1,880, MD Microbiology with 1,832 and MD Psychiatry with 1,596 seats.There are also 1,508 MD Pharmacology seats, 1,393 MD Anatomy, 1,373 MD Physiology, 1,357 MD Biochemistry, 1,326 MD Respiratory Medicine/Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases, 842 MD Forensic Medicine and Toxicology and 663 MD Emergency Medicine seats.No admissions beyond approved intakeThe NMC has clarified that the current seat matrix does not include applications for increasing the intake of existing PG courses or applications for starting new PG courses that are still awaiting approval.Any additional seats or newly approved courses will be added through an updated seat matrix, the Commission said. The matrix can also be revised based on decisions taken by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), the competent Appeal Committee or any other competent authority.The NMC has directed medical colleges and institutions to admit students only against the number of PG seats approved by MARB and reflected in the latest notified seat matrix.
