New Delhi: The Delhi police have registered a second FIR against Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and senior leader Priyanka Gandhi, among others, accusing them of assaulting police personnel and obstructing government work during the protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over ‘vote chori’ allegations. This is the second FIR against the top Congress leaders related to the protest on Wednesday, the first being for allegedly forcibly entering the Akashvani Bhawan on Tuesday during the march from Parliament to the Election Commission office. Rahul on Wednesday said that he considered FIRs a medal on his chest and with 45 FIRs under his belt, he is aiming for 100.Officials said the police are examining the allegations and the role of those involved. Rahul and Priyanka were accused of physically engaging with police personnel and obstructing their work. On Wednesday, 91 people, including MPs, were detained as the I.N.D.I.A. bloc MPs boarded three buses to move to Jantar Mantar for the protest.EC-SIR row | ‘Policemen scratched me all over’: High-voltage drama unfolds in Delhi on day 2 of Oppn protest; Priyanka Gandhi lies down on road as cops detain MPsOfficials said the police were analysing several videos shot on mobile phones in which police personnel, including women officers and constables, were allegedly assaulted during the protest near Jantar Mantar. They said FIRs were registered under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to assault on public servants, obstructing public servants in the discharge of their duties and other provisions. At a luncheon meeting before Wednesday’s protest, Opposition leaders had zeroed in on Jantar Mantar as their destination after discussing options like going to the Election Commission, India Gate and Rashtrapati Bhavan. Jantar Mantar got the final nod as they felt it would send a message of “reclaiming Jantar Mantar”, as it has been made out of bounds for protesters. Leaders had also discussed two options — getting off the buses as soon as the police prevented them from moving ahead and remaining in the bus, even if it extended to unearthly hours, if police did not provoke them. As the buses were stopped by the police and leaders “witnessing” police using disproportionate force on party workers, the leaders got out, with Priyanka lying on the road along with Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra and others while Rahul stood guard against detention of leaders. However, the police claimed that leaders and supporters clashed with the police, disobeying their instructions and violating the prohibitionary order imposed in the area.
