The parents of 19-year-old Ankita Bhandari, who was killed in Uttarakhand in 2022, were detained while protesting near India Gate before being released in early on Thursday morning. Along with Bhandari’s parents, several Congress leaders, including including party’s media and publicity department head Pawan Khera, social media department head Supritya Shrinate and Indian Youth Congress chief Uday Bhanu Chib, were detained and later released.During the detention, her father issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the Centre to cancel Gautam’s appointment. Ankita’s father threatened to launch a nationwide agitation if the government did not accept their demand. The parents have demanded that that recent appointment of Dushyant Kumar Gautam’s as Sikkim governor be put on hold until the ongoing CBI investigation into the case is complete.Uttarakhand: Ex-BJP MLA arrested over viral clip linked to Ankita Bhandari case”Ankita’s parents have been fighting for the past four years to secure justice for her. All India Mahila Congress President Alka Lamba said they will continue to fight until Gautam resigns from the position.Gautam, who is a BJP leader, has been named in the case by the Bhandari family and activists. He was appointed the governor of Sikkim on Monday.Bhandari worked as a receptionist at the Vanantra Resort in Rishikesh and was killed on September 18, 2022. Her body was recovered from the Chilla canal four days later. Resort owner Pulkit Arya, son of former BJP leader Vinod Arya, and two accomplices have been convicted in the case and sentenced to life imprisonment.The case turned political over allegations that an unidentified VIP was linked to the crime. Bhandari’s family and activists have demanded an investigation into the alleged VIP angle, with Gautam’s name being raised. Meanwhile, Gautam has denied the accusations and initiated defamation proceedings against the parents.The Congress has alleged that the appointment is aimed at shielding Gautam, arguing that a governor cannot be subjected to criminal proceedings while holding office.A former national general secretary of the BJP, Gautam had served as the party’s in-charge for Uttarakhand.
