Bengaluru: Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs Minister Rizwan Arshad on Friday wrote to Union Petroleum & Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri seeking new domestic LPG connections in Karnataka to meet the rising demand. “Karnataka has witnessed significant population growth, urbanization and expansion of residential settlements in recent years. Consequently, there is a continuing demand from eligible households for new domestic LPG connections,” Arshad stated in his letter to Puri.Inspection in Karnataka finds 25% of LPG cylinders filled below declared quantity“A considerable number of newly formed households, economically weaker families, migrant and low-income households as well as families in newly developed residential areas, are yet to obtain LPG connections,” Arshad wrote. As of August this year, Arshad said 36,000 applications were pending for new domestic LPG connections in the state. “After the global LPG crisis, the process for enabling new domestic connections has been stopped and the applications are pending for new domestic LPG connections from the past few months,” he wrote. Now order LPG cylinder on Swiggy, but proceed with cautionArshad said the non-availability of new domestic LPG connections could force households to depend on traditional fuels such as firewood, charcoal and kerosene, increasing women’s workload, indoor air pollution and the risk of household accidents. Newly formed households in rapidly growing urban and rural areas, particularly migrant workers, low-income families and employees in cities such as Bengaluru, could face difficulties securing connections. The price difference between domestic and 5-kg LPG cylinders could further burden middle-class and economically weaker households, while shortages may encourage illegal activities and hamper efforts to ensure universal access to clean cooking fuel, he said. Arshad urged Puri to direct oil marketing companies to make adequate numbers of new domestic LPG connections available to eligible households in the state.
