Chennai: Japan’s Omron Healthcare on Friday formally inaugurated its first India production facility in Gummidipoondi near here, even as it eyes exporting blood pressure monitors manufactured at the new factory to the European market by next year.  The new unit spread over an area of 258,333 square feet at Origins by Mahindra industrial estate in Puduvoyal has been built within three years of the Japanese firm signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu Government in 2023. Omron to start manufacturing BP machines in Chennai factory by December A global leader in clinically proven medical devices for home health monitoring and treatment, Omron will manufacture three models of blood pressure monitors at the new facility. Currently designed to produce about 300,000 blood pressure monitors annually, the company plans to increase its production capacity tenfold to make 30 lakh units annually in the next two years. “We plan to make Chennai a base not just for the Indian market but also develop it as a base for exports. We believe that the new unit will start shipping blood pressure monitors to the European market by the end of 2027,” Ayumu Okada, President and CEO, Omron Healthcare Company Limited, told journalists at the new manufacturing unit. However, the first year of production will focus entirely on the domestic market, she said. Till now, Omron Healthcare has been importing its medical devices from its massive unit in Vietnam and the company currently holds a 40 per cent market share in blood pressure monitors in India. The new unit, in which Omron Health Care has invested about 128 crores, will employ about 120 people with the company making it clear that it will source components locally in line with the Union Government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative. Okada added that the company will also start manufacturing nebulisers along with blood pressure monitors at the new facility starting next year. “These will also be exported to the European market. We chose Chennai for its strategic location. Chennai and Ennore ports serve as global logistics hub connecting markets worldwide,” Okada said.The company’s CEO also said they currently have no plans to invest more in the new facility but will decide on it at a later stage.
