Why hue & cry over peptides that
have positive impact?: Experts
Bengaluru: Recently, the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) department stopped an event that was advertised to be the first peptide party in the city. While the FSDA said that the organisers could not furnish the required documents and so, the party was stopped, experts say peptides have a number of advantages if used rightly and that regulatory landscape should evolve to accommodate new inventions.Peptides are sequences of protein molecules in a specific chain and are manufactured synthetically. Globally, there are various types of peptides which have proven to help improve wellness and overall health. However, awareness and legal use of peptides are still in nascent stages in India and this calls for regulatory intervention, experts said.“There are various types of peptides. They are especially popular in the wellness sector and cosmetics industry. While they are popular in US and Japan, we are yet to catch up. However, regulatory landscape should encourage such new inventions. If we have to wait 17 years to finish trials and other regulatory requirements for such new inventions, we are only killing inventions,” said Dr Vishal Rao, member of the cancer prevention committee in Karnataka. He has two patents in his name.FSDA suspends 133 drug licences, cancels 20 in Karnataka in JuneWhile safety concerns do exist, experts said it was important to consider the rapidly growing scientific advancements in the sector and ensure that the new inventions are available for public good at the earliest.“Peptides should also be looked at from a positive perspective. They are not synthetic drugs, but are synthetically made proteins and there are people who have worked on them for years,” Dr Rao said.Yet another doctor said peptides were not just for wellness or longevity, but also offer hope for muscle injuries, bone health, skincare and other diseases.
