Mumbai: Mumbai is poised for a major transformation driven by large-scale redevelopment, the renewal of Dharavi, new economic centres and an expanding multimodal infrastructure network, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said stressing that the city’s growth must increasingly become a growth engine for the entire state.Addressing the 6th edition of the Real Estate & Infrastructure Investors’ Summit (REIIS) 2026, organised by NAREDCO Maharashtra, Fadnavis outlined a vision of a Mumbai that is not only redeveloped and better connected internally but also seamlessly linked with the wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region and the rest of Maharashtra.“The Dharavi project should be viewed not merely as a housing or real estate exercise but as an opportunity to create a modern urban ecosystem, improve living conditions and unlock the potential of one of the city’s most strategically located areas,” he said. The redevelopment of Dharavi is expected to form an important part of Mumbai’s next phase of urban renewal, alongside redevelopment of ageing housing stock and creation of new business and commercial districts. CJP is ‘Congress Jitao Programme’: Devendra Fadnavis”The larger objective is to make better use of scarce urban land while providing modern housing, infrastructure and economic opportunities,” he said. The vision also extends towards what is being described as Mumbai 4.0—a next-generation phase of the city’s evolution in which physical redevelopment and connectivity are integrated with technology, new economic opportunities, modern infrastructure and improved quality of life. “The objective is to create an integrated network in which Mumbai’s ports, other ports, highways, rail corridors, logistics hubs and industrial centres are connected, enabling businesses across Maharashtra to access maritime trade more efficiently,” he said, adding better connectivity between ports and inland production centres could reduce logistics costs and allow industries located away from Mumbai to participate more effectively in global trade. “The idea is to make Maharashtra not just Mumbai-centric, but a state in which multiple economic centres are connected to the coast and to each other,” he said.
