Bengaluru: A 32-year-old man was found dead in a lake in Nelamangala on Bengaluru’s northern outskirts, a day after he and another person were reportedly beaten by a mob for snatching a woman’s mangalsutra. However, the deceased person’s advocate has alleged that the police beat him to death in custody and cooked up a story that he had escaped while being taken to the hospital. Fake passport, new Identity: How UP businessman was caught at Bengaluru airport Police said Battery Jayanth, along with an associate named Yathish, snatched the mangalsutra belonging to Lakshmi, a 29-year-old woman, at Mahimapura near Kasaba on August 23. Local residents chased down both men and beat them black and blue. The locals later called the police. When police arrived at the scene, both men were apparently lying unconscious. Police called an ambulance to take them to the hospital for treatment. But while they were being taken to the hospital, Jayanth and Yathish allegedly pushed the ambulance driver and ran out. In a twist of events, Jayanth’s body was later found in Govenahalli Lake in the neighbouring village of Dodderi, while Yathish was nowhere to be seen, police said. A senior police officer overseeing the investigation said Jayanth had sustained injuries in the mob assault and later drowned in the lake after escaping. Man dies, wife & son survive after car crashes into roadside tree in Bengaluru The officer denied claims that Jayanath had been taken into custody. “We have footage of the mob beating up Jayanth and have booked some of the assaulters seen in the video for murder,” the officer told DH. The murder case has been registered at the Thyamagondlu police station, another officer said. Jayanth’s advocate, however, alleged that his client died in custody as he was detained after members of the public called the police. “Police are cooking up the story of his escape from the ambulance,” the advocate said. According to police, Jayanth was involved in 24 criminal cases, including the chain-snatching on August 23. He would threaten people at knifepoint and rob them, police said. The body has been shifted to Victoria Hospital for post-mortem, and further investigations are underway. Police are also hunting for Yathish.
