
Koramangala gets ‘wealth from waste’ centre
Bengaluru: A solid waste management learning centre was inaugurated in Koramangala on Monday, promoting the idea of treating municipal waste as a resource rather than a problem.Forest, Ecology and Environment Minister Ramalinga Reddy inaugurated the centre, which will offer practical training in scientific waste segregation and disposal to school and college students, apartment residents, commercial establishments and pourakarmikas.RV Educational Institutions are among those partnering in the initiative, said KN Ramesh, Commissioner, Bengaluru South City Corporation (BSCC).The centre has a 13-tonne wet waste biomethanation plant, with the biogas generated to be supplied as fuel to nearby hotels. A 25-tonne mini transfer station (MTS) has also been made operational.Krishna Byre Gowda conducts surprise inspection of solid waste management arrangements in BNCCA textile recycling unit will process fabric scraps from garment factories and tailoring shops into bags, mats and bedsheets, generating local employment, BSCC said.Thermocol waste is being compressed into blocks and sent to Delhi for conversion into items such as photo frames, earrings and decorative products. Work is also underway to convert discarded mattresses into reusable fibre.BSCC has also begun collecting bulk waste from BTM Layout assembly constituency. Residents can inform their local residents’ welfare association groups about discarded furniture such as sofas, cots and tables. NGOs, including Saahas, will collect the waste from doorsteps and take it to the Kasa Rasa centre for recycling, Ramesh said.
