The Centre on Monday moved Supreme Court seeking to quash FIRs filed against protesters over allegations of violence and vandalism during the NEET paper leak protests led by the Cockroach Janta Party in Delhi and other states. The plea will be heard by a bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Tuesday (September 1). Supreme Court declines to restrain CJP’s September 5 protest march; trusts it will ‘remain peaceful’Solicitor General of India (SGI) Tushar Mehta said that the Centre seeks the top court to invoke its extraordinary powers under Article 142 of the Constitution to quash FIRs against protesters.Earlier in the day, the apex court declined to restrain the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) from staging a protest march from India Gate to the Delhi Police headquarters on September 5, having confidence that the demonstration would remain peaceful and lawful. The CJI noted that two issues were involved — law and order, and a policy matter. He said the court presumed that everyone would act in a responsible, peaceful and lawful manner.
