'I, Nobody' movie review: Heist, interrupted

‘I, Nobody’ establishes its pitch in the first 15 minutes — a heist gone wrong, and a common man trying to untangle himself from it. The narrative sounds simple enough and perhaps even redundant; however, the film keeps it interesting with its brisk pace, smart edits and a banger of a background score. Characters seem to thrive in a better-written screenplay where nuances and layers keep them intriguing. In a title that’s reminiscent of the Bob Odenkirk-starrer American action-thriller ‘Nobody’, this film too tries the ‘underdog rising’ narrative, but is on a different journey.Even though not an out-and-out actioner, the stunt choreography in the first half is commendable; special mention — elevator fight sequence. While everything is going beat-by-beat, the film, quite surprisingly, starts to digress. What was a rare premise of drama-cum-thriller shifts gears and enters territories that don’t justify the complexities created for its characters in the first place. The action sequences go from creative and not-so-superhero-like to superfluous and mass-ey. The story meanders and adds situations that aren’t crucial to its progression. The actors who were in great form for almost three-quarters of the film struggle to keep up with the story. The tail-end seems far-fetched and falls rather short of being interesting for a film that managed to grab attention and keep the momentum going for a good while. ‘What a movie! Hats off’: Upendra reacts to Yash’s ‘Toxic’; disappointed fans hit backPrithviraj Sukumaran and Parvathy Thiruvothu are in good form. They carry the complicated couple dynamics very well, supported by Hakim Shahjahan and Ashokan. The child actors are well-cast and sensitively portrayed. Directed by Nissam Basheer and written by Sameer Abdul, ‘I, Nobody’ starts strong, builds intensity and drama, only to take a U-turn at the culmination and never quite gets to its destination.
