New Delhi: Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday outlined plans to four-lane India’s high-density rail network to boost capacity on the country’s busiest corridors.The seven routes span nearly 11,000 km and carry about 41 per cent of the total railway traffic while covering just 16 per cent of the network. They link major cities and regions, including Delhi–Howrah, Howrah–Chennai, Chennai–Mumbai, Mumbai–Delhi, Delhi–Chennai, Mumbai–Howrah and Delhi–Guwahati, a statement said.Indian Railways launches drive for safe drinking water The expansion will create four lines on these corridors to meet rising passenger and freight demand. Vaishnaw also underlined the environmental and economic advantages of rail transport over other modes.The project forms part of the government’s broader effort under Prime Minister Narendra Modi to enhance railway capacity, lower transport costs and promote cleaner mobility, supporting future growth in passenger and freight movement across the country, the minister said.
