Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Assembly on Thursday unanimously adopted a resolution seeking recognition of Tamil as the principal language of the Madras High Court. This is the second time that a resolution is moved in the Assembly regarding this issue with the first one being adopted on December 6, 2006.This is the seventh resolution the TVK has passed in the Assembly since coming to power in May this year. Though lacking any “legal sanctity” and serving at best as political pressure, the ruling parties have repeatedly passed resolutions on issues concerning both the state and the country at large.Vijay’s sports push| Tamil Nadu to build Olympic City and Motor Sports City Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, who moved the resolution, described Tamil as one of the world’s ancient languages, with a grammar and literary heritage spanning several millennia. He noted that the language is spoken by about 17 crore people across the globe, including eight crore in Tamil Nadu. Contending that Tamil had been declared the Official Language of the state, the resolution asked the Union government and President to approve the change under Article 348(2) of the Constitution and Section 7 of the Official Languages Act, 1963. The resolution sought the use of Tamil, in addition to English, in judgments, decrees, and orders of the High Court, subject to authorisation by the Governor with the President’s previous consent. Vijay also recalled that the Tamil Nadu Assembly had unanimously passed a resolution on December 6, 2006, seeking the use of Tamil in the High Court of Madras and had forwarded it to the Union government. The resolution added that a statement made by the then Union Law Minister in the Rajya Sabha on February 2, 2018, said that the full court of the Supreme Court of India had not agreed to the proposal.
